Days 2 to 4 – Cayo District and Mountain Pine Ridge

Most Belizeans would agree that although each district has its own charms, Cayo stands out above the others – rich in history, culture and especially nature. You’ll explore waterfalls, lush jungles and huge cave systems. Xunantunich is just one of the important Mayan sites located in this area. Nearby, the 55-square-mile-site of Caracol is home to the ruins of what was once one of the most powerful cities in the Mayan world. In neighboring Guatemala lies Tikal, one of the oldest Mayan sites in Central America and once the home of nearly 100,000 people.

Children traveling with us can choose to exchange letters with a local child of similar age before leaving on their adventure. While on the trip we organize a pen pal meeting with a scheduled activity like soccer or hacky sacking. It’s amazing how such interaction can be a real eye-opener for everyone involved. arrow Visit the Mayan village of San Antonio   Head to the Mayan village of San Antonio to visit with the Women’s Group—a communal pottery workshop and kiln. One of the only Mayan dance groups in the country will dazzle us with a performance of traditional dances. arrow Maya ruins of Xunantunich Visit these mysterious Maya grounds, the site of what was once an important ceremonial center. The underwater world of Belize's coral reefs is the greatest stretch of coral in the western hemisphere. Day 9 – Depart Belize City / Arrive U.S.

Optional Community Service Extension

arrow Have an extra week, and interested in community service? Add a week or more to your adventure and deepen your understanding of the lives of the people who live here. We’ll use our partnerships with the local community to connect you to their sustainable projects. Depending on the specific need at the time you might paint, build, plant, or simply read aloud. This is a great opportunity for our children to gain a sense of giving back to others, and to see that those who seem different can be very much the same. We've found that you need to devote at least a week to be even a small help to the sustainable project.

Belize, being a sanctuary of Mayan culture and civilization and a vital part of the development of ancient Mayan history, can provide the answer to all your doomsday doubts. The Mayan calendar does end in 2012, but the Mayan people certainly don’t see this as a gloomy reality or any cause for concern – they believe that this date marks the completion of one cosmic cycle and the beginning of another. We’ll visit the mysterious Xunantunich Ruins, an ancient ceremonial center. You'll be amazed by the views from atop El Castillo, which stands 130-feet tall. arrow The Friends Across Borders Program (pen pals) As part of our Friends Across Borders program —a Thomson family favorite—we’ve arranged for a pen pal meeting this afternoon for the children who exchanged letters with a local student before leaving on their adventure.
