Teens today know all about environmental awareness and most have profound respect for nature and knowledge of ecological issues. Nowhere is that respect and knowledge better appreciated than in Costa Rica. While this friendly, tropical nation is a living, breathing science lesson, it’s also an adventure lover’s paradise. Costa Rica is a place where teens can play hard and show their parents what they’re made of.

Your family will discover a variety of wildlife, explore Corcovado National Park on the Pacific coast, the lush mountain landscape and fertile soil of Turrialba and the rich volcanic habitat around Cerro de la Muerte, one of the highest mountain peaks in Costa Rica. As we explore all these areas, we will be mixing in activities like whitewater rafting, hiking and an exhilarating zip line canopy tour.

Along the way we'll meet a few of our Costa Rican friends, admirable people who honor, respect and work to maintain a harmonious relationship with nature. Meeting the locals to share stories and backgrounds always seems to be a trip highlight for teenagers and is a great way to round out our Costa Rica adventure for teens.

Day 4 – Turrialba/ Cerro de la Muerte

Cerro de la Muerte is one of the highest peaks in Costa Rica, and the area around the mountain is a fascinating habitat with a rich volcanic past and many species of plants and animals found nowhere else.

Days 5-7 – Cerro de la Muerte/ Corcovado

Corcovado is the experience of a lifetime for those of us who crave untamed wilderness and spectacular wildlife viewing. Washed by warm Pacific waters on three sides, almost half of the peninsula is protected within Corcovado National Park, the largest of the parks and reserves that make up the Corcovado Conservation Area.

Day 8 – San Jose

Welcome back to San Jose! The capital of Costa Rica offers rugged landscape, perfect weather and world class theaters and museums.

Have an extra week, and interested in community service?

Add a week or more to your adventure and deepen your understanding of the lives of the people who live here. We’ll use our partnerships with the local community to connect you to their sustainable projects. Depending on the specific need at the time you might paint, build, plant, or simply read aloud. This is a great opportunity for our children to gain a sense of giving back to others, and to see that those who seem different can be very much the same. We've found that you need to devote at least a week to be even a small help to the sustainable project.

Hotel Bougainvillea

The Hotel Bougainvillea is a small hotel only 20 minutes from the airport. It’s located in Heredia, which is a province of San Jose. Set on a gorgeous landscape of 10 acres of lush gardens, the hotel features 80 comfortable rooms, each with a balcony and an amazing view. Other highlights include a pool, a tennis court, a gift shop, a restaurant, internet access, and a business center.

Hotel Casa Turire

Located on the shores of Angostura Lake, this hacienda style hotel offers 12 rooms and 4 spacious suites. Surrounded by mountains and well groomed gardens, the hotel has a swimming pool and business center.

Trogon Lodge

Trogon Lodge is located near Cerro de la Muerte, one of the highest mountain peaks in Costa Rica. The views in the area are astounding, with lush and rugged countryside, carrot and potato plantations, and fertile valleys. The secluded lodge sits among colorful flowers and centennial oak trees, surrounded by mountains and green forest. All the lodge’s comfortable rooms have a private bathroom and heating unit, and all feature a view of either the Savegre River or the forest.

Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge

Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge, located on the Osa Peninsula, borders Corcovado National Park. Casa Corcovado sits on a 170 acre private reserve and can only be reached by boat. The grounds here are beautiful gardens, and a main focus of the lodge is conservation. There is a small, spring-fed swimming pool as well as a larger pool and a restaurant and bar. The tiled rooms feature beautiful views and a hammock just outside the door; they come with mosquito nets, ceiling fans and lovely stained glass doors.
