Why South Africa?

Cape Town
Known as the "Mother City," Cape Town boasts a breathtaking natural and urban landscape so different from the typical image of what Africa looks like. This is a major metropolis where striking cliffs loom over the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and amazing beaches attract visitors from all over the world.
Thornybush Game Reserve
Sits on the border of famous Kruger National Park. Although not as well known, Thronybush is lacking in fame only! It is home to an incredible abundance of majestic wildlife: giraffe, elephant, buffalo, kudu, wildebeest, impala, zebra, warthog, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, the critically endangered African wild dog, and much more! The smaller park offers phenomenal wildlife viewing opportunities in a more intimate fashion than larger parks for an enhanced and unforgettable experience.
Incredibly Diverse
To call South Africa "culturally diverse" would be a dramatic understatement. In addition to many unofficial languages, the country has 11 official languages: English, the Dutch-influenced tongue Afrikaans, and 9 different indigenous African languages. South Africa's mix of cultures has earned it the nickname "the rainbow nation," and your family will have the chance to meet many of the friendly faces that make up this beautiful rainbow.

Why South Africa with Thomson?

With Thomson  Family Adventures, your family will get a varied sampling of the many things that make South Africa special. Take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain, meet young residents of a surrounding township, and search for seals, humpback whales, dolphins, and sharks in Walker Bay. Explore the scenic Cape Floral Region, one of the most diverse floral regions in the world and head to Thornybush Game Reserve for an incredible African wildlife experience.
Delve into the social history of the country by learning about Mandela, visiting community development programs, and more
Any traveler to South Africa is bound to be curious about the history of apartheid and how it ties into different aspects of the local culture. Your family will have the chance to visit Robben Island and see the cell where civil rights hero Nelson Mandela lived for 18 years. There will also be the opportunity to explore the Springbok Experience and learn about the social significance of rugby as both a dividing and unifying force over the course of South African history.
Extensive Wildlife Viewing Opportunities
South Africa is definitely one of the planet's best destinations for wildlife viewing, and we'll make sure the nature lovers in your family are more than satisfied! Watch eagles and kestrels soar over Cape Town, and keep an eye-out for eland, bontebok, baboons, Cape Mountain zebras, and over 250 species of birds in the Cape Point Nature Reserve. In the waters of Walker Bay, keep an eye out for seals, dolphins, southern right whales, penguins and Great White Sharks. But the real wildlife highlight is the Thornybush Game Reserve, home to a spectacular concentration of unique animals. Search for giraffe, elephant, buffalo, kudu, wildebeest, impala, zebra, warthog, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, the critically endangered African wild dog, and much more!
