Dear Thomson Families,

Happy New Year to everyone!  I love being able to look ahead to the brilliant possibilities of 2010, refreshing old routines and finding new worlds to explore. Sadly the news from Haiti weighs on all of us; if you are thinking about donating to relief efforts there are many good ones to support - don't hesitate! Here are a few things for you this month, including another puzzle (of course).

Read on, and happy adventuring!

Rate Breaks

We're constantly tweaking and negotiating and bringing the savings home to you. First we brought in large group discounts for 2010; we're refunding thousands of dollars to our March travelers. These discounts start at just six guests, so bring along your friends or other family members and everyone saves.

Now we've renegotiated two destinations to make them more affordable without sacrificing our quality or service. China is back to 2009 prices; this summer, add on a few days and wrap up your adventure with a visit the World's Fair in Shanghai. Looking for something tropical? Consider Belize, full of Mayan ruins and offering world class snorkeling. We've redesigned our package so now you can visit this amazing country for less than last year's pricing.

Meet Our Pal: Dorothy Johnson

Dorothy is an intrepid grandmother who found us on the Web and has been on two of our adventures, with a different grandson each time. She grew up on a farm, began traveling at 17, and discovered running as an adult. Her favorite travel moments? Running a full marathon on the Great Wall of China (and she only began running in her 40s!) And what about the big roar of the lion right outside the dining tent at the conclusion of their final dinner on safari in Tanzania? Now those are memories!
Read more about Dorothy and in our blog of travel stories, coming soon.

Travel Tip: Duffle Bags and Passport Dates

1) On many of our adventures you may need to divide up your luggage and leave some in one place, to be reunited with it a few days later. For this purpose it is great to pack a spare, smaller duffle, and also to carry a luggage lock to use on the bag you leave behind. The spare duffle will come in handy again returning home with souvenirs - or even dirty laundry.

2) With airport security tighter than ever, rules that travelers once scoffed at are now being upheld like never before. The biggy right now is passports. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your return date. So if you fly home April 1, your passport has to be good until October 1. Hurry now, go check!

Things We Learned This Month

- The happiest people in the world live in Costa Rica
- Portugal is one of the top five destinations for families
- The only state you can type with one row of letters on the keyboard is Alaska
- 01/02/2010 was named Palindrome Day. I noticed the same with 01/22/10. Kind of like "a man a plan a canal Panama." Who even took the time to figure that out?

A Poem From the Basir Family

As part of their 2007 holiday card, the Basir family included a poem we still enjoy reading. Inspired by their family safari, it will remind any of you who have been of the delights of Tanzania.

In Arusha we alit with wildlife our quarry
We packed up our rover, headed out on safari
Vast baobobs filled Tarangire, and scores of elephants
A great bull crunched breakfast by the tents
Cheetahs posed on a rise, a delight to our eyes
Whilst lions coughed through equatorial nights
Down in the crater, at Ngorongoro
Ranged rhino and hippo, buffalo and flamingo
Gazelles leapt, lions fed, baboons buffooned
At Olduvai Gorge we viewed bones marooned
Our balloon rose with the sun over Serengeti
On to the Mara we tracked wildebeest and topi
Zebras and giraffes surrounded our camp by the host
But the leopards and elands enchanted us most
We puddlejumped to Zanzibar, Island of Spices
Washed off our dust in the Indian Ocean - how it entices
A dhow sailed us to reefs, where we dove
Come night, we dreamt by the sea, of Africa, by jove!
