Dear Thomson Families,

Welcome to December (almost)... Where did the fall go?  We hope your Thanksgiving was a wonderful time with friends and family—all of whom give us many reasons to be thankful every day. Though we are still getting calls for holiday travel in December, it is just about impossible now to find the magical combination of flights, hotels and guide. The reality is a very sad disappointment. Which prompts us to remind you—a perfect family adventure cannot be planned overnight! And yes, the early bird gets the worm. I have not been a good example, however—I still have not nailed down my plans to visit my son in Madrid this spring. Let's all get on our spring plans together!

Read on, and happy adventuring!

February Awesomeness

Deep in the dark of winter, many schools have a February break designed for students to take a deep breath and gear up to last through to spring. We've noticed a distinct uptick in February travelers looking for escape. Some things are already sold out, but we still have room on our most incredible, most miraculous, most exciting Baja Adventure.
The hiking, surfing, kayaking, and horseback riding are all first class. If that isn't enough, I promise swimming with the sea lions confirms this is an amazing trip. But the most miraculous part of this adventure is found only in February: the opportunity to see the California gray whales migrating. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them. Curious whales, birthing their young in the quiet lagoons, cozying up to your boat so you can see them up close and maybe even reach out to feel the barnacles on their sides. It's a once a year opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience—don't miss it.

Smithsonian Family Adventures

We are so excited to have teamed up with Smithsonian to present a new venture in family travel. We've combined the Smithsonian Institution's global reach with our devotion to fun and educational travel for the whole family. The result is five special itineraries for you, each one unique and delicious. Join us in 2012 on a Smithsonian Family Adventure.

Turkey Facts

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's safe to talk about turkeys as something other than a good dinner. Did you know that turkeys are the only breed of poultry native to the Western Hemisphere? That they have great hearing, but no external ears? That wild turkeys can run up to 25 mph and have at least 30 different calls? The gobble is made by an adult male to attract a female, and humans can hear this call from over a mile away. In the wild they are a pretty amazing bird. You can learn more about them in a wonderful book called Illumination in the Flatwoods by Joe Hutto. PBS ran a fabulous documentary based on this book called My Life as a Turkey. This is a wonderful family story, check it out!

Meet a Trip Leader

Occasionally we offer a special departure with an expert or two along—like our art and photography adventures. In June 2012 we're offering something super special in the Galapagos, with both an accomplished photographer and a renowned evolutionary biologist to enhance your experience. Stewart Halperin is the renowned photographer co-leading our Galapagos: Vision and Evolution Adventure June 15, 2012. Since you might not know what an ethologist is, or why one would become an accomplished photographer, we thought a casual Q&A would be fun. Click HERE to read all about him.

Photo Contest Results

We had so many awesome entries to our photo contest; everything sent to us was wondrous to look at. We so much enjoyed being reminded of all the great destinations, the wild activities, and the togetherness our families enjoy when they travel with Thomson. We're proud to say all of the photos we use on our website and in our brochure come from you (well, a couple came from our staff too I guess!) You can see the winners here.

Our RIDDLE - and another Super-Smart Genius Award

This is a super good puzzle and even though the answer is easily found on the internet, we know you will find supreme pleasure in figuring it out for yourself.

Can you assign the right numbers to the following letters to make this formula work? SEND + MORE = MONEY

We'll be drawing a name from a TFA hat in five days. If we draw YOUR name and you've answered correctly, you'll win a Super-Smart Genius Award worth $200 off your next Thomson Family Adventure. Please solve this with your brain power, though you are allowed to consult your very clever children. Cheating is not allowed (and I'll know if you do!).
