Dear Thomson Families,

Well, well, well, what a month it's been.  Rain in Peru and rain in Massachusetts. Machu Picchu was closed after flood waters destroyed railways and roads. Our offices closed temporarily due to flood damage, but we are always at the ready to handle your perfect family adventure even if from remote stations. Now the water table is receding, we've 'sprung forward' into longer, brighter days, and the sun is out. What a great time to plan ahead for your summer adventure. What's on your list?

Read on, and happy adventuring!

The Green Report from Thomson

Here in Watertown, MA both Thomson Safaris and Thomson Family Adventures are housed under the same roof. Last year we installed 110 solar panels on said roof to help power our offices. Since we started using them we have generated over 14,000 kWh of electricity, enough energy to operate a TV for 98,114 hours. Our solar array generates 25-30% of our overall electricity usage depending on the sunshine. We think that's pretty cool.

China, Avatar and Thomson Family Adventures

For years our China adventure has included a remote national park called Zhangjiajie. We like it because it is really off the beaten path (almost no one has ever heard of it) and it's fabulously magnificent. Now this little slice of heaven has shown up at the Oscars - as the backdrop for the film Avatar, which is now the most popular film ever in China. Come join one of our groups this summer and see it for yourself!

Turkey, Our Best Adventure Ever

History, art, culture, food, people, mountains, beaches. There is no limit to the amazing features in Turkey. Every summer we send groups of 12 -16 people who come home glowing from what they call "the most incredible adventure of their lives." With its rich history and art, delicious food, beautiful landscapes and the Mediterranean, too, it has something for everyone. You'll explore Istanbul, hike in the Valley of the Spears, even stay a couple of nights with a local family! Then set sail on your private yacht for four days of heaven, exploring the coast. We still have two departures with room for you to join families with kids from ages 7 to 15 - call now!

Blogs and Photos

Our blog is now live! Find it here. Recently Kirsten has been blogging from Tanzania, where she reported to us (on the down-low) that she's been so busy having fun and learning new things she needed an "emotional nap". Go now and read about what she's up to. Want to write something about your own adventure? Just let me know.

Great photos: we want yours! Since we got a wee bit behind on our photo contest we're gearing up for the catch-up, so there's still time to enter. Sure, it takes forever to sort through all of those digital images, but it is never too late to send in your 15-20 favorites from your Thomson Family Adventure. Haven't traveled with us yet? Well, what are you waiting for?

Planning Ahead? Why You Should Book Your Safari for February 2011 - or Beyond

If you think our luscious Tanzania Family Safari is just so amazing that you'll never be able to afford it, think again. We're offering a slightly shorter safari during the one week President's Week vacation in February. Sure, you'll have to pull the kids out of school for a day or two, but we'll make this an educational experience their teachers can't argue with. The safari is less expensive, and the airfare will be as much as $1,000 less per person than during the peak seasons of December or summer. Plus, book before the end of April and we'll guarantee the 2010 price. This date sold out last year, and we expect it will again for 2011. If this sounds right for you give us a call.

Travel Tip: Packing Preparedness

This just seems so obvious I don't know why I never thought of it in my years of traveling. When you pack your suitcases, be sure there is something for everyone in each bag. That way you won't get stuck like our friend Kathryn, who spent two weeks in Chile with nothing to wear, while her husband had more than he probably needed.

Interview: Want to know who you might be traveling with?

Meet our pal Kathy Kinney. Truth is, we have many favorite families but I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about one of them who will be traveling with us again this summer. Here's part of what Kathy has to say (find the whole fascinating story here): When asked why she likes to travel, Kathy said:
"I grew up living in the same house in the same small town in Texas until I left to go away to college. My father worked all the time, and we did not travel except to drive a short distance to visit my grandparents. When I went away to college in California, I realized that there was a lot more to see than just Texas. Eventually I met my "Prince Charming," who was a midshipman cadet at the United States Naval Academy. We married shortly after his graduation, and launched a thirty-year military career. The navy was very good to us, and the best time of our lives was four years in Germany. From our base in Stuttgart we could travel all over the European Continent, and we were off on adventures every chance we got. Our children adapted so well, and they planned many of our trips. We lived almost like Gypsies. We definitely had the travel bug. I have now been to all seven continents, and I know that I will want to travel as long as I have breath to keep me going."

Kathy is now headed out on our Costa Rica Multi-Sport Adventure July 3 - 11, with three grandchildren ages 10, 11, 12 - and you could go too! Believe me, no one doesn't love traveling with the Kinney clan.

Our RIDDLE - and Another Super-Smart Genius Award

Let's say you bought a pack of playing cards as a souvenir while traveling in Peru - you know, the ones with the great photos on them. Let's say you are playing a card game with these cards, and you're dealt a hand containing one Jack, three nines, four clubs, and two spades. What is the least number of cards you could have in the hand?

We'll be drawing a name from a TFA hat in five days; if we draw YOUR name and you've answered correctly, you'll win a Super-smart Genius Award worth $200 off your next Thomson Family Adventure. Please solve this with your brain power, though you are allowed to consult your very clever children. Cheating is not allowed (and I'll know if you do!).
