Dear Thomson Families,

Summer is sweeping in — Happy graduation to everyone!  We are busy making sure our travelers this season are packed up, prepared, and ready to go on their awesome family adventures. In light of the many heartbreaking events across our country, travel might seem at first glance to be an ‘extravagant luxury’ – but really, just how much are those shared discoveries and a lifetime of memories worth? Family travel is one powerful investment, and simply another way to hold our loved ones close. Special thanks to our friend Carolyn in Tennessee – about to head off on her third Thomson Family Adventure – who wrote to thank us for letting her be a reference (can you imagine!) “Thomson is like a good book – once you read it, you want everyone else to experience it too! You have really created an experience that lasts a lifetime, and there's not much in this world that can last that long.”

Read on, and happy adventuring!

Summer Ideas Further Afield

If you aren’t yet set with your summer plans, do not despair – we’ve got you covered. If your gang falls in the ‘17 to 20 something’ range, try our Galapagos Multi-Sport Adventure July 26. If you’re more like 7 – 11 (and really last minute) how about Smithsonian Family Costa Rica June 22? Or join teens and tweens July 13 on our Peru: Land of the Ancient Inca. Just two rooms left on the Smithsonian Family Wonders of Turkey July 20.

Packing Tip

Whether you’re headed to camp, the beach, or to a foreign land, you probably have a bit of packing anxiety. I’ve been a longtime fan of zipper style plastic bags, invaluable for waterproofing – but now I’ve discovered PACKING CUBES. I know, I’m late to the game. But now I really understand the joys of packing everything into cubes of various sizes and colors. Nothing gets shuffled and crumpled, and I no longer have to dig through the suitcase to find that item I know is there somewhere… You can find them at your favorite adventure store, or in our Gear Shop.

Giving Back

I am sure many of you have opened your hearts and wallets to help those impacted by recent disasters. I always wonder how the money is allocated, so I found this article informative. For some ideas of where and how to donate, look here. Every dollar counts – and don’t forget, a good pint of blood donated locally is free, and always welcome!

Our Summer Fun

Rick and Judi (owners of Thomson Family Adventures / Thomson Safaris) often treat us to a fabulous company summer outing. One year we were only told to ‘dress casually and wear comfortable shoes’… then were surprised at lunch with a walk along the Charles River here in Watertown to a load of canoes waiting for us to paddle down to Cambridge. Even the dogs came! Another year we had an outing to Thompson Island (no relation!) in Boston Harbor where we played games and gorged on lobster. I missed the year we went whale watching (I was off camping in the Galapagos Islands, poor me!) What are some of your best local summer fun adventures??

Photo Contest

See our top ten picks on Facebook (and "Like" us while you’re there), you’ll find a mix of memorable wildlife and landscapes and lively family portraits. Sadly we could not include every one of the thousands of entries, but keep your eye out on our website and Facebook for a glorious featured photo every week.

Just for You

Did you know any of our adventures can become your own personal, private escape? Grab a scheduled date, or ask for your preferred departure. We’ll personalize activities and hotels (a villa?) and handle every detail so you just show up and enjoy the experience. Maybe it’s just your family, a reunion of old friends (kids not required!), or a clan of four generations. Whatever your size or occasion, we have the expertise to create your trip of a lifetime. (PSSSST! Our favorite Costa Rica villa is still available December 21 – 28th)

New Route to Panama

Did you know Boston is the largest US market without a nonstop flight to Latin America? Well no more! On July 10 Copa Airlines will offer daily nonstop flights Boston to Panama City. This means an easy 5 1/2 hour flight, just one more great reason to join Smithsonian Family Panama August 3! (or in December or beyond…)
