Dear Thomson Families,

December arrived so quickly in 2012; we’ve already had snow in Boston.  So your winter plans are all in place, right?? Really, you can stop calling us about December travel now, because December is here. February might still work (see below), and we have lots of fabulous ideas for spring. But don’t forget this month to take some time to reflect on the year that has been. What family moments do you remember best? (We’ll draw from your responses for a $200 TFA gift certificate) We hope you had an excellent Thanksgiving and you are enjoying this holiday season.

Read on, and happy adventuring!

Photo Contest Results

The end of our year means trying to narrow down all of the fabulous photos you’ve sent us over the months. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it. You can see the three winners here; they come from China (#3), Galapagos (#2) and Tanzania (#1). If you are traveling with us in December, get your cameras ready, as this is the beginning of our new contest year. Remember, we have a video category, too!

17 to Infinity: Adventures for the Grown Up Family

Just because your kids are graduating high school, or college, or a master’s program doesn’t mean they’re beyond traveling with family. Consider one of our new adventures designed with the more sophisticated crew in mind. Like Sporting Costa Rica January 24. Not just rafting and kayaking, beaches and amazing wildlife but a night race at the Irazu Volcano; choose a 5K, 10K or 21K course. Gather up your active and fit family for this unique opportunity – space is limited!

What You've Been Waiting For

We love Central America for its ease to get to and its wealth of culture, activities, warmth and water. Now we’re offering something new to our families: Guatemala! Beginning in summer 2013 we will be offering this dynamic adventure all year round; there is no bad time to go. You’ll try your hand at the local craft of naïf painting; kayak the lovely Lake Atitlan; visit bustling local markets full of textiles and trinkets; hike the active Pacaya Volcano; and explore the ruins of the ancient Maya city of Tikal. Meet pen pals, support a local community, learn about coffee and make some chocolate! We’re even offering an optional Spanish class for those who want to expand their vocabulary. This 9-day adventure is full of rich and rewarding experiences – come join us!

The Kingdom of Morocco

Practice your Arabic and your French in this magnificent country of colorful souks and stark mountain ranges, vast desert and verdant oases. Its coastline offers bustling fishing villages and lovely beaches. Come enjoy the rich spicy aromas, the chants of the snake charmers, the lure of the mountains. You’ll explore the narrow passages of the markets, hike the rocky path to a local shrine on Mount Toubkal, wander the olive groves and rose gardens of the valleys, and sit down to steaming tagines of flavorful stew at the end of your day (or plain chicken if you prefer!). A wonderful exploration that will open your hearts to many new ideas and places, this adventure is great for families with active members aged 8 and older, and an ideal adventure for teenagers and young adults too. Just two departures in summer 2013 – call now!

March: In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb

They say this will be a hard winter, and March always seems to be the time you can almost tell it’s ending… but those winds can be so harsh. A great time for a family escape, just when you think you can’t take it anymore. Go in search of lions in Tanzania; monkeys in Costa Rica; the mysteries of Machu Picchu in Peru; or the barrier reef in Belize. We have room for you to join others to all of these places and more.

But if You’re Stuck on February

It may not be easy but we are always glad to go the extra mile. If you are highly motivated; if you can find flights and vacation time; if you realize you just have to get out of town – well, call us! We might be able to fit you into our terrific group of teens heading off to see the whale migration in Baja. Maybe you’d like to explore the jungles and rivers of Panama. Or look for rays and tortoises in the Galapagos. How about checking out the hippos in the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania? Give us a shout while there could still be some options!

Galapagos Calendars

Our fabulous Ecuador guide Sebastian has created a beautiful 2013 calendar with photos from the Galapagos. We’re sending this to our families traveling to the Galapagos this December, and a proceed of the sales will benefit a small community school in Ecuador. Calendars sell for $20 each – let us know if you would like to purchase one or more.

Great Kids

We all know our kids are great; their open minds and absolute conviction that anything is possible makes amazing things happen. Take Emily, an 11 year old who developed and markets her own website to raise money for homeless and abused animals. You can read all about her here. Please tell us what amazing things your children are doing to inspire the world around them – we want to share these stories with our families.

Our RIDDLE - and another Super-Smart Genius Award

At our family travel conference last spring we played two games in our bowling tournament. Ecuador beat Egypt in both games. Also, Baja beat Peru in both games. The winner in game 1 came second in game 2. Baja won game 2 and Peru beat Egypt in game 1. No player got the same placing twice. Can you figure out who finished in which place on each game?

We'll be drawing a name from a TFA hat in five days. If we draw YOUR name and you've answered correctly, you'll win a Super-Smart Genius Award worth $200 off your next Thomson Family Adventure. Please solve this with your brain power, though you are allowed to consult your very clever children. Cheating is not allowed (and I'll know if you do!).

If you haven't taken our travel survey before, click here to take it and save $300 on your next adventure.
