Oh Sandy, How Could You? |
|
Hurricane Sandy tore through the Northeast this week, leaving devastation in its path. Of course you all know this news, but we wanted to say our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible storm. An event like this is an excellent time to take stock and feel the gratitude for all we have, just by being together. And then give back a little! When is the last time you gave blood, or $10 to your favorite charity? Maybe today is the day.

December Done; Focus on February |
|
Though we’re willing to try (if you can find flights) our adventures for December are almost all closed for the season. But you still have time to get onboard for an amazing whale migration adventure in Baja Feb 16, or a Short Family Safari departing Feb 15, or our most popular Galapagos Islands and Inca Ruins
the same week…. If you haven’t made your plans check in with us now.

Pumpkin Facts |
|
This year I carved a pumpkin for the first time in ages. We cleaned and roasted our seeds (toss with olive oil and salt, then roast at 300 for about 45 minutes) and they were a nice bonus to our artwork. Did you know that the tradition of the jack ‘o lantern began in Ireland where they were carved out of turnips and potatoes? It wasn’t until the Irish came to the USA that they discovered the pumpkin! Pumpkins are part of the gourd family, and they are a nutritious, low calorie, low fat food. The heaviest known pumpkin weighed 1810 lb 8 oz; and the largest pumpkin pie was baked in 2005 and weighed 2020 lbs. Wow.

17 to Infinity |
|
We have been doing adventure travel for families with older teens and college graduates forever – but still, many of our families mistakenly believe they’ve outgrown our family trips. So we’re making an official category of travel, called
17 to Infinity. You – and your ‘kids’ – just can’t be too old to travel in these groups (or in your own private enclave). Best of all, our college kids often have better vacation dates for travel – like January. Just after the holiday rush we have three sophisticated adventures led by guides who will match a more adult curiosity and thirst for experience. Delve deeper into the culture, history, and adventure of trekking in
Peru; desert camping in
Egypt; the wildlife and island beauty of the
Galapagos.

Journaling by Hand |
|
We loved receiving a journal entry written during our Thomson Family Adventure to Turkey last summer (you can read it
here) and it made me think about what a nice tradition this is. Bruce, the dad, has been keeping this journal for his son Jake since he was born. In my family I used to take notebooks on vacation and made (FORCED!) everyone write in them each day. That didn’t last long, but the few notebooks I have I cherish. What are your favorite family stories and traditions?

A Family Safari Adventure |
|
Last summer one of our families went off on a great safari (aren’t they all great?) This is the first of 3 blog posts describing their experiences, and if you’ve ever wondered what might await you in Tanzania. It’s a family experience like none other.
